The M A Chidambaram School of Nursing is an offshoot of the Multipurpose Health Workers (Female) course of 18 months duration started by the MA Chidambaram Institute of Community Health of the Voluntary Health Services Hospital at Taramani in 1983.
Both these institutions were founded by the illustrious duo Dr.Sanjeevi and Dr.M.A.Chidambaram with an intense desire to provide education and the required training in health care and patient care including community health services to the less privileged sections of the society especially the rural poor.
Dr.Sanjeevi founded the Voluntary Health Services Hospital in
July 1958 after he retired from Government Services. This grew to be 450 bedded Hospital over the years.
Community Health Care was Dr.Sanjeevi’s passion and he was ably supported in his venture by the well known Industrialist and Philanthropist Dr.M.A. Chidambaram who provided financial and management support to the Community Health Services wing of the Hospital by founding the M A Chidambaram Institute of Community Health as a unit of MAC Charities. Later on this was merged with Voluntary Health Services.
The MAC (Educational) Foundation anther Trust founded by Dr.M.A.Chidambaram has started and been running the M.A.Chidambaram College of Nursing since 1991 as part of the Group’s health care and patient care activities..
When the Tamil Nadu Government took a decision to discontinue the Multipurpose Health Workers course it was decided by the Foundation to start the the M A Chidambaram School of Nursing. for running the 3 Year “Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery” Formal sanction was obtained from the Tamilnadu Government in July 2000 and the School commenced functioning from July 2001.
