CSI RAINY MULTISPECIALITY HOSPITAL
SHORT HISTORY HOSPITAL
CSI Rainy Multispeciality Hospital which was originally named as Christina Rainy Hospital was started by the church of Scotland Mission and maintained almost entirely by the income of patients and managed by the CSI Diocese of Madras. The hospital provides the medical needs of all the people regardless of caste, creed, rich or poor.
In 1886, Miss.Christina Rainy visited Madras and she realized the urgent need to provide medical assistance for women. Dr. Matilda Macphail was appointed as the first medical missionary to work among women. She took charge in 1888. She opened a dispensary for women and children in the compound of a church in Royapuram.
Dr. A.M. Macphail found it was necessary to provide a place for inpatients and arrangements were made to accommodate 12 women and 2 children in the mission house in Royapuram. Within a year, 90 in-patients were admitted. By 1905 two more doctors were appointed.
The Urgent need of a hospital came apparent and a site was purchased in 1907, and in 1909 the plan was approved. In 1911, the foundation stone was laid. In 1914, the patients and staff were moved to this hospital in Gollavar Agraharam Road, Old Washermenpet. This hospital was named “Christina Rainy Hospital” as a memorial to Miss. Rainy. The hospital is now called “CSI Rainy Multispeciality Hospital”.
