Admission
The course offered in Rotary School of Nursing is “Diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery. This is a 3½ years course comprised of teaching and training for 3 years and Internship for 6 months. The curriculum followed is as defined by the Indian Nursing Council. The students appear for the Government Board Examinations every year and graduate with the Diploma on completion of the course. The Diploma is recognized all over the world.
The Class-room Lectures and Demonstrations are given at the School and the bedside Practical training is General Nursing and Midwifery is given in the affiliated hospitals.
Besides these, training in Psychiatric Nursing is given at the Government Institute of Mental Health, Chennai 600 010 and Community Nursing in Health Posts and Primary Health Centres in Chennai City and suburbs.
Even though many of the students selected are from Tamil Medium in their schooling career, special English coaching is given to them during the course, which is in English Medium.
An annual Educational tour is also conducted for the exposure of the students to the teaching and training aspects of other centres.
Eligibility:
The Academic year is from 1st July to 30th June. In accordance with the sanctions in vogue every year 20 students are admitted. Unmarried women Candidates who have completed 17 years of age as on 1st July of the year of admission, who have passed +2 examination either with English as a subject or with good working knowledge of English are eligible to be considered.
Being a non-commercial and non-profiteering institution run by Rotary, an international organization dedicated to service, the cost of the course in this School is kept minimum to provide preferential opportunity to eligible women of the socio-economically underprivileged families who could ill-afford doing the course elsewhere, to become full fledged Nurses, whereby they would become bread-winners of the family as also would give care to the community as Nursing Professionals. The Madras Southwest Rotary Projects Charitable Trust of the Rotary Club of Madras Southwest provides substantial subsidy for the Project every year.
Mode of Admission/Admission Procedure:
Applications are received in response to minimum publicity given annually on the eve of announcement of +2 results (by about the middle of May). Admissions are made based on the +2 marks and performance in Interview. No entrance examination is held.
Fees and Financial implications:
Prospectus and Application Form are issued against payment of Rs.150 by DD in favour of the institution.
The following are mainly the financial liabilities for undergoing the 3 ½ years Diploma Course and Internship in this Nursing School:
- Fee for the entire course, which includes tuition and training fees Rs.1,30,000
- Expenses during the course towards stationery, exam. Fees etc. Rs.15,000
- Subsidised Mess Charges of about Rs.900 per month during the course
The following options are open for meeting out these:
Option I:
The student herself can pay all these and thus be absolutely free to complete the course and take decision as to her employment in any institution of her choice.
Option II:
The student can avail bank Educational loan and pay the Fee of Rs.1,30,000 by herself or availing the assistance of our School. If she avails it by herself, there will not be any commitment for our school. By way of assistance our Nursing School can arrange for the Educational loan from the Indian Bank, Nandanam Branch, Chennai 600 035, which will entail compliance with the conditions listed below:
The student and her parent will have to enter into a Deed of understanding, wherein it is stipulated that:
- The Educational Loan would be for Rs.1,30,000 or as much as may be needed by the student, over and above whatever part of it she herself could meet;
- During the Course, the interest on this loan (about Rs.1,300) will have to be paid by the student every month;
- The Educational loan would have to be repaid in monthly instalments during the five years after the student graduates out of the school with the Diploma. This would be about Rs.3,500 per month.
Option III:
The student may opt to get sponsored by one of the medical institutions in the City. Our Nursing School would arrange this. The conditions covering this sponsorship are as follows:
- The sponsoring institution will meet out the School expenditure of Rs.15,000 during the training period ex gratia
- In reciprocation the student would have to work in that institution for a period of 3 years after graduating with the Diploma by a contractual commitment.
- During the contractual service she will be paid a consolidated pay of Rs.6,500 per month during the first year, Rs.7,000 during the second year and Rs.7,500 during the third year.
- If she had availed bank Educational Loan with the assistance of our School, the EMI due to the bank will be recovered every month from her consolidated pay and remitted to the bank.
- If, for any reason, the student is not able to comply with the agreed upon contractual service to the sponsoring institution, she would have to pay a sum of Rs.30,000 to get exonerated of the contractual service commitment.
- Further she has to clear the entire Educational loan availed with the assistance of the School by a onetime payment.
General conditions
- If, at any point of time during the course, the student intends discontinuing the course, she has to pay Rs.50,000 and also clear the bank loan, if availed with the assistance of the School, fully.
- All her certificates (including the original Diploma, if she has completed the course) will be held by the School and these will be released only after her clearing all the above liabilities and producing “No Dues” certificate from all the concerned institutions.
- There will be a Deed of understanding covering all the above as also other aspects, which may have to be signed by the student and parent.
Facilities offered by the School:
- Free hostel accommodation during the three years course
- Free transportation from the hostel to the Nursing School and other training institutions
- Subsidised boarding at Rs.750/- per month, payable by the student
- Medical Examination soon after joining the course will be conducted at charges with optimum concession and these charges are payable by the student. Medically unfit students will be terminated from the course.
- Cost of Uniforms will have to be paid by the student.
- No stipend will be paid during the course.
