 Annual Report  

I. INTRODUCTION

The nursing profession contributes to the health services in a vital and significant way in the health care delivery system.  It recognizes National health goals and is committed to participate in the implementation of National Health policies and programs.
Omayal Achi college of Nursing which professes the motto “Love to Serve” shoulders this contribution since 1992 by preparing qualified nurses to assure responsibilities as professional and competent nurses and midwives to provide,  promotive,  preventive, curative and rehabilitative services.

The Undergraduate and Postgraduate students of Omayal Achi College of Nursing are prepared by a vibrant team of faculty who inculcate the values of caring, compassion and teach them to make independent decision in nursing situations, protect the rights  and facilitate individual and groups in the pursuit of health to function in the hospital, community nursing services and conduct research studies in the areas of nursing practice.      
This preparation helps all our graduates to be placed well in India and abroad in higher level  posts  and thereby bring laurels to Omayal Achi College of Nursing.
On this eve of the 16th Annual Day Celebrations and release of our Annual Magazine ‘NURTURE’, it is my pride privilege to share the achievements and future plans of Omayal Achi College of Nursing.

II. ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

At present the college has 196 B.Sc (N) and 38 M.Sc (N) students on the role.  As of today 522 B.Sc (N) graduates and 182 Post graduates have passed out and are well placed in India and abroad.  The college secured 100% results with numerous distinctions and first classes.

Faculty :  There are adequate number of nursing and non nursing faculties.  The recommended student teacher ratio as per INC is maintained.

Innovative and modern methods of teaching are used to enable the students to develop awareness, understanding and critical thinking capacities.

The teachers enjoy academic freedom and autonomy in curriculum planning, implementation and evaluation

Physical facilities  :  Spacious classrooms, pre clinical laboratories, hostel and mess facilities, facilties for extra curricular activities, counseling and guidance, seminar hall, departmental faculty rooms have created a working climate for all the teachers and students.

College Library:  The college library is unique manned by three librarians with M.Phil degree in Library and Information Science. The library functions from 8 am – 9 pm.  LIBASOFT  a software for…………….. is used in the library. The management has allocated a generous budget for the library and never says no for the purchase of any new addition of National or International journals.

Clinical facilities:  The clinical facilities are well selected and organized as per the learning needs of the students which inturn enables the students to have hands on  experience.  This helps us in preparing clinically competent nurses.

III. University Convocation

University convocation was held on 11.10.2007.  49 B.Sc (N) and 18 M.Sc (N) students were awarded their degrees by the Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

IV. Memorandum of Understanding

 College of Nursing University of Saskatchewan, Canada

Six students of final year B.Sc(N) along with Prof. Barry Brown and Mrs. Yvonne Brown visited Omayal Achi College Of  Nursing on an exchange programme to study the similarities and  differences between Canada and India.  The students were in India from 8.1.08 to 15.2.08.

College of Medicine, University of Sasketchewan, Canada:

A pre experimental study to assess the effectiveness of teaching package on stroke prevention strategies among rural population was undertaken  as a collaborative  research work with Dr.Vivian Ramsden.
A memorandum of Understanding was signed between College Of Medicine, University of Sasketchewan, Canada and Omayal Achi College Of Nursing, Chennai, India, to undertake collaborative research initiatives, capacity building initiatives which focusses on professional development and for exchange  studying and research opportunities on 24.03.08          

Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, Scotland: Six students out of 15 who completed the post certificate B.Sc (N) courses are well placed in UK

Simon Fraser University, British Columbia: Two students of M.Sc (N) I year are in the process of taking up a double Masters degree in Global health which will be awarded by the Simon Fraser University in Jan 2009.

College Functions

College Annual Day :

The college celebrated the XV Annual day on 26.6.07 at Chinmaya Heritage Hall, Chetpet, Chennai 31. 

Dr. Meer Mustafa Hussain Vice-Chancellor , the T.N. Dr.MGR Medical University, Chennai. was the Chief Guest and Mrs. Valli Alagappan, Managing Trustee and Chairperson Governing Council released “Nurture 2007”.  

The AMM Arunachalam Silver Medal for the Best out going students were awarded to

The AMM Anapoorni Arunachalam Silver medal for best clinical Nurse was awarded to

Unnamalai Achi Proficiency prize was awarded to class toppers by Mrs. Olagammai Veerappan.

Mrs. S. Anitha, Ms. Reeba and Ms. Thenmozhi, University Gold medal winners for highest marks in community health nursing were awarded a cash prize of Rs. 1000 each by the Management..

2 awards for the skilled clinical nurses were awarded to  IV year B.Sc(N) students for securing highest University Practical marks in Fundamentals of Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing, Paediatric Nursing and Community Health Nursing by TACT(the Academy of Clinical Training) Anna Nagar.
The III year B.Sc(N) students bagged the rolling trophy for securing the highest distinctions in their class.

Ms. Merlin Lazarus was the  awarded the “Best OCN Athelete’ award.

The management honored 3 senior Professors  Dr. Raj Narayanan, Dr. Natarajan, Prof. Daniel for their outstanding contribution for the college in their area of expertise.

Dr.(Mrs).A.V. Raman. Dean, Omayal Achi College Of  Nursing,  received the Dr. Renuka Somasekar Mukerjee “Best Teacher Award”. 

The students gave a variety entertainment programme at the end of the program.

2. World Breast feeding week :

  Breast feeding week was celebrated on the theme “Breast feeding – The first hour saves one million babies” in collaboration with IAP, IMA, BPNI and Johnson & Johnson at OACHC, OACN and all the tie up hospitals.

3. Alzheimer’s Awareness Day: 

This day was celebrated from 24.9.07 – 26.9.07 by conducting quiz competitions, elocution, essay writing, poster presentation on and symposium.

4. Lamp lighting ceremony:

The XVI lamp lighting ceremony was conducted successfully on 23rd Nov. 2007.  Dr. T.J Rao,  Honorary Director of SISH was the Chief Guest.  Dr.(Mrs).A.V. Raman lighted the Florence Nightingale Lamp and delivered the Pledge to the I year students.  Mr. A.R Kasi Viswanathan Trustee, felicitated the Chief Guest.  The function was attended by the Trustees, Visiting Professors, Guest, Parents and Faculty members.

5. World Diabetes Day  : 

  Omayal Achi College of Nursing in collaboration with M.V Diabetes specialty center conducted an awareness camp at Omayal Achi College of Nursing.  The M.Sc (N) and B.Sc (N) students conducted the awareness program on diabetes at SISH ad OACHC.  The Medical Surgical Nursing department conducted a research on  knowledge regarding diabetes mellitus among school going adolescents at different school in Ambattur.

6. Cancer Awareness Program:

The Omayal Achi College of Nursing students conducted a cancer awareness program by exhibiting posters on Cause, Pathophysiology, treatment Modalities, prevention etc. to the staff and students of Omayal Achi College of Nursing, the same was exhibites at  Sir Ivan Stedeford Hospital and Omayal Achi Community Health Center.  

7. First Alumni Meet:

 The first Alumni reunion was held on 9.2.2008 at Omayal Achi College of Nursing.  94 Alumni members participated in the reunion ,of whom 62 were B.Sc (N) graduates of 32 were M.Sc (N) graduates.  Prof. Mrs Kanchana Principal welcomed the gathering, Dr.(Mrs).A.V. Raman Dean,  presented a CNE on the theme “Transition in Nursing” and Dr. Raj Narayanan highlighted  on the current trends in medicines.  Lunch and entertainment programs were all well appreciated by the alumnus.

8. World health day:

The college organized a seminar on the World Health Day theme “Protect Health from Climate Change”.  Dr.(Mrs).A.V.Raman Dean unfolded the theme, and the Head of the departments presented the seminar on different aspects of Climate Change.  The SNA body organized a poster presentation on the different health impacts of Climate Change.

9. National Service Scheme:

The NSS unit of Omayal Achi College of Nursing was inaugurated on 29.09.2006 at Gowdipuram village.  Every  month various NSS activities were conducted such as Special camps, celebration of  world diabetic day, World Breast Feed Week, Heart day, Anti T.B day,  Rose Day etc..,  The NSS volunteers conducted health education and health awareness programme on various health related topics.  The village leaders, ward  members, self help group members actively participated in the programme.

10. Youth red Cross:

The YRC unit of this college is very active and participates in various actibvies such as Conducting Blood donation camps, campus cleaning, celebrating world Diabetes day, rose day, Alzemier’s day, Safe mother hood day etc., Volunteer services “may I Help You” rendered in kilpaukl Medical College Hospital and Government ophthalmic Hospital, Egmore. They also conducted Socio – economic survey at Keezhanilai kottai, Pudupettai, Keezhkondaiyar, and bangarampettai and organized mass Health education programme on the basis of survey report.

11. Immunization

All the  students and faculty were immunized againt Hepatitis B infections

12. Blood Donation camp:

The college successfully organized Blood Donation camp in collaboration with Madras Voluntary Blood Bank Association and the Tamil Nadu Dr.M.G.R.Medical University. 46 Units of blood was donated by the staff, students of Omayal Achi College of Nursing and the public.

13. Annual Sports Day

The college celebrated XVI Annual Sports day on 8.3.08.  Mr. Chandrasekar Senior General Manager IOFS ndc, was the chief guest, Mr. A.R. Kasiviswanathan trustee presided over the function and felicitated the chief guest.

The Lakshmi Arunachalam Rolling Shield for Individual Championship was bagged by Ms.Merlin Lazarus.

Mr.Mouleeswaran shield for the best March Past team was awarded to Sapphire House.

Rolling shield for throw ball was awarded to Sapphire house.

Mr.Poosha Durai rolling shield for tennicoit was bagged by Sapphire house.

Overall group Championship was awarded  to Sapphire house.

14.  ANNUAL CNE PROGRAM:

ADeveloping Teaching Modules in Nursing:
The CNE  on developing teaching modules in Nursing was conducted on 16.01.08 at Omayal Achi College of Nursing.  Dr. Mrs. A.V.Raman Dean, was the resource person and highlighted on how to prepare teaching modules in Nursing subjects..  The participants had hands on experience in developing teaching modules in their area of specialty.

B.  Stress Management

A workshop on “Stress management” was organized on 16.02.08 . A total of 71 participants attended the workshop.  Dr. Saramanickaraj  was the Chief Guest and resource person.  Prof. Ciby Jose unfolded the theme.  Dr. Saramanicakaraj highlighted on the meaning of stress, factors causing stress and different methods of managing stress.  Relaxation techniques were also demonstrated to the participants.

C. Departmental Research: 

(i)  Medical Surgical Nursing:
A study to assess the knowledge on diabetes mellitus among adolescence in rural and urban schools, Chennai 2007.

(ii) Pediatric Nursing:
A study to assess the effectiveness of nutritional intervention on the physical growth of children between 3 – 6  yrs residing at selected villages, Thiruvallur.

(iii) Maternity Nursing:
A study to assess the knowledge and attitude of parents regarding premarital counseling and its importance in preventing genetic disorder at selected rural  village of Arakambakkam, Thiruvallur District, Chennai.

(iv) Community Health Nursing:
A study to assess the knowledge and attitude  on multiple factors influencing hypertension among hypertensive clients attending chronic illness clinic at Omayal Achi Community Health Centre, Arakampakkam, Chennai, Tamil Nadu

(v) Mental Health Nursing:
Assessment of he morbidity pattern of behavioral  deviation among adults residing at Arakkampakkam

X. Staff Welfare Programme:

  • The Annual Increament for the Staff was done.
  • Pay Revision for the Non-teaching staff was done.
  • The total number of holidays was increased from 10 to 12.

XI. Guest lecture

Dr. Usha Udupa psychiatrist delivered a guest lecture on child and adolescent psychology to all the students and faculty.

XII. Omayal Achi Community Health Centre:

Our Omayal Achi Community Health Centre is dedicated to a philosophy of excellence in providing health services, Quality education and community oriented research in an integrated system that  values quality life, family interaction and respect for community and health professionals.  The centre is committed to the delivery of community oriented, culturally service, evidence based affordable health care through out the life cycle of the population adopted by the centre.  
The centre has served total of 13,425 clients in the year 2007 among which 9,947 benefited from the general morbidity clinic, 495 from antenatal clinic, 303 from gynecological clinic, 1807 from out reach, 189 from dental, 65 from ENT, 142 from Siddha, 69 from Eye and 886 from Under five clinic.

The newer development in the history of the centre is the establishment of the underfive clinic from August 2006, introduction of Ultrasonogram and conducting a Women’s camp. The community is now demanding Cesarean section facility, Sterlization (Family Planning) and  a full time OBG factor at the  centre.  The Management is in the process of meeting the community’s proposals.

XIII. FUTURE PLAN

  1. To  select candidates for Ph.d nursing under Tamil Nadu Dr. Mgr Medical University in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Community Health Nursing.
  2. To participate in collaborative research activity between Queen Margaret University, Edinburg and Omayal Achi College of Nursing.
