ORINTATION
PROGRAMME OF REVISED GNM SYLLABUS
In
view of the changing scenario of the Nursing education due
to the developments in technology and new requirements in
nursing, TNM council had taken the timely measures. These
measures included revising the GNM syllabus and conducting
the orientation program of the revised syllabus. The Minutes
of the Resource Faculty Meeting, resolution by the RESOLUTION
BY THE RESOURCE COMMITTEE and the workshop on the revised
syllabus orientation programme are given below.

The
Resource Faculty thoroughly prepared a comprehensive revised
GNM syllabus for implementation from 2007 - 2008 at TamilNadu
State.

RESOLUTION
BY THE RESOURCE COMMITTEE HELD ON 26th & 27 March 2007
The
resource committee on deliberation suggested the following
effective measures for the standardizing an uniform pattern
for revised GNM syllabus at Tamil Nadu State as per INC. Moreover,
INC is a national statutory body to maintain uniform standard
of nursing in India. The legal empowerments are:
To prescribe syllabus and to frame rules for system and pattern
of examination
To prescribe norms and criteria to establish any schools and
colleges in India
Therefore,
the suggestions made by the Resource Committee may be considered
to maintain the uniform standard of nursing education in India
as per INC.
1.
The psychiatric examination to be conducted as internal evaluation.
The distribution of marks to be made uniform by allotting
50 marks each for school assessment and school examination
(internal) as per INC.
2.
A typographical error was identified in the total marks allotted
for practical evaluation for internship, where as the distribution
of 20 marks each for 5 areas / which comes to total 100.
3.
The III years examination results to be declared in time for
the students to commence their internship. Internship will
commence only after successfully completing the III year.
4.
The eligibility stated for candidates wishing to pursue GNM
are
"
Date of birth of the candidate on admission will be completion
of 17 years to 35 years.
" Candidates who have studied and passed physics, chemistry
& biology are only eligible.
" Candidates can be admitted from July 31st to Dec
31st 2007.
5.
It is mandatory for every candidate to have 75% of theory
and 100% of practical attendance for every year of study.
6.
Candidate having one subject arrear may be promoted to the
next year. Candidate having two or move arrear in subjects
to be detained.
7.
A total of 26 weeks are allotted for internship inclusive
of 1 week each for examination and vacation respectively.
8.
Faculty appointed as internal or external examiners to have
a minimum of 2 - 3 years of experience with respective subject.
9.
List of examiners (internal and external) to be prepared from
all the recognized institution under this council irrespective
of Private or Government institutions as per INC, so as to
conduct practical examination with internal and external examination
as prescribed in the syllabus.
10.
Internal Assessment to be calculated as follows as per INC:
For theory : Internal 25% & external 75%
For practical : Internal 50% & external 50 %
b) The student has to be passed in the internal assessment
in each subject ie., both in the teaching and practicals by
securing 50% marks separately in each theory and practical(s).
11.
Inspection Committee: The School of Nursing and College of
Nursing administrators (Principal, Vice-principal, Reader
or Senior Tutor) may be involved in the inspection to establish
School of Nursing and College of Nursing par with their working
experience ie., school of nursing to be inspected only by
the school faculties likewise college by college faculties.
12.
Vocational Nursing / Nursing Foundation course to be renamed
as ANM course from the year 2008.
13.Programme
such as THADCO, TNOU which are not recognized to be discouraged.
The
above suggestions are applicable to all the States in India,
since INC is legally empowered to frame rules in the above
matter.

WORKSHOP ON REVISED GNM SYLLABUS ORIENTATION PROGRAMME

INAUGURAL
The inaugural session commenced ritually with Thamizh Thai
Valthu followed by welcome address by Dr.G.Bava.Fathurudin,
Director of Medical & Rural Health Services & President
of Tamil Nadu Nurses and Midwives Council, Chennai.

The
dignitaries on the dais lighted the kuthuvilakku.
The
Chief Guest of the day, Mr.V.K.Subburaj, I.A.S, Secretary
to Government of Tamilnadu Health & Family Welfare delivered
the chief guest address. The Honourable Secretary emphasized
on the prime importance of nurses in the health care delivery
system. The global demand for nurses from India adds honour
to our nation. The image of nurses in society is placed high
in the pedestal as every citizen is aware of nursing profession
and the key role of the nurses in the health team. He stated
the uniform standards implemented in all nursing institutions
will fetch a higher price for nurses in the global health
care industry.
The Special Guest, Dr.Thiagavalli Kirubakaran, M.D, Director
of Medical Education & Chairman - Board of Examiners for
GNM expressed her sincere happiness and appreciation in conducting
a comprehensive workshop for the implementation of revised
GNM syllabus. She emphasized the clinical experience of nurses
is atmost important during the course of study. And the contribution
of every single nurse in the hospital is much more than the
doctor for the health care consumers. She also stated the
ratio of doctor and nurses for the ever-growing population
in India is statistically unfavorable in India. The demand
for nurses in other countries will further detoriate the nurse,
population ratio. She continued by stating that standardizing
the nursing education is the need of the hour.
Dr.Kalavathy
Ponniraivan, Dean Madras Medical College & Deputy Chairman
- Board of Examiners for GNM stated that the doctors learn
from Nurses on various occasions the therapeutic & diagnostic
procedures. She appealed to the Honourable Secretary to the
Government of Tamilnadu to fill the existing vacuum in the
Government Hospital, Chennai.
The
Government Hospital at Chennai being the first hospital in
Tamilnadu, established in the year 1906, hence the hospital
ought to be made as Centre of Excellence of Nodal centre for
the health professional and health consumers.
The
keynote address was delivered by Dr.Punitha Ezhilarasu, Former
Dean, College of Nursing, CMC Vellore. She highlighted on
the need for change in the GNM syllabus and requested to participants
to have mindset necessary for Nursing fraternity to implement
the changes in the syllabus to suit the health care scenario.

Midwives Council proposed the vote of thanks.
The
inaugural session concluded with National Anthem.
WORKSHOP
The
participants of the workshop were Heads of Institutions from
all the schools of Nursing TamilNadu State. A total of 163
participated in the workshop.

The
following issues have been raised during the Workshop on Revised
GNM Syllabus Orientation Programme by the floor ie., Principals
of Schools of Nursing on 28th March 2007.
1.
The Heads of Institution expressed their practical difficulty
in implementation of the new syllabus for the present academic
year 2006-2007 - The representation made by the Heads of Institutions
to implement in the year2007-2008.
2. A reference of textbook list for faculty and students to
be furnished at the earliest.
3. Various representations were made by Heads of Institution
from private sector to enable their students to be posted
in Government Hospital during internship to gain knowledge
and competent skills in patient care.
4. It is mandatory for male nursing candidate to undergo midwifery
training and have no alternative course.
5. The psychiatric examination will be conducted only in the
respective schools as per INC to be followed [ie] 50 marks
for performance ongoing assesment and 50 marks will be at
the end of the year. The marks to be sent to the Board.
6. Internal & External examiners to be appointed both
from private & Government Institutions as per new INC
syllabus. Examiners- Internal exam, External exam, Invigilation,
Paper setting & Paper correction.
7. Internship to commence soon after completion of III year
examination as per INC, so that the result may be announced
before starting the internship.
8. The members preferred conducting practical exam simultaneously
in all institutions at the same time to avoid time loss.
9. The difference of age limit stated for admission of GNM
by INC and Govt. Board are 17 to 35 yrs & 17 to 25 yrs
respectively-This may be clarified with INC.
10. The total internship duration is 26 weeks inclusive of
1 week for vacation and 1week for examination.
The
Sl.No.4,5 & 6: Should be followed as it is in the INC
syllabus, since INC is empowered to frame the syllabus. Therefore
the system and pattern of examination strictly to be adhered
as per INC norms.
VALIDICTION
Dr.Jeyaseelan,
Dean, Annai J.K.K Sampooraniammal College of Nursing, Kumarapalayam
delivered the welcome address.
Dr.M.D.Selvam,
M.D, Deputy Director of Medical Education, the Chief Guest
in his address declared the implementation of the new syllabus
for GNM to be implemented from 2008 - 2009 only and the permission
for the same will be obtained from Health Secretary of Tamil
Nadu.
He
also expressed his concern of the issues and problems faced
by nursing students, faculty and Nursing Institution. He declared
the office of the State Board of Nursing will have a permanent
building in the Director of Medical Education block at the
earliest. He stated that final year results will be announced
in time for the students to do internship and there after
join the health work with out any delay.
Mrs.Lalitha
Varghese, Secretary CMAI Board, Bangalore, the Guest of Honor
expressed her consent in coordinating & co-operating with
the Nurses & Midwives Council, Tamilnadu to effectively
implement the revised GNM syllabus.
The
vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs.Rajathi Durairaj, Nursing
Tutor Grade - I, ICH, Chennai.
The
